Lounge/Study

The large, comfortable lounge wraps around two sides of the house with double doors opening out onto a portico area for enjoying outside drinks and lunches.  This room has views over the gardens.  It features two hand made crystal chandeliers imported from Prague, stunning art nouveau fire place and William Morris curtain fabric.  Decorated in soft green, it is a peaceful and restful sitting area with ample room for casual dining if desired.  We often eat at the breakfast table under the window, which is directly opposite the kitchen.

The entertainment equipment (vcr, media centre PC, skybox, music system) is designed to be located out of the way, in the study with the ability to command the systems with a single remote control unit.  Not only does this simplify things for the more non-technical of us, but keeps the clutter out of the lounge.

This room is wired for surround sound speakers.  The lounge is separated from the formal dining room by double cavity sliders which can be opened up to create a huge entertaining area for parties and functions.  Leading off the lounge is the study/library with built in shelving and storage.

Auckland is the gateway to the far north of New Zealand which boasts some of the best beaches, great scenery and warm climate conditions.  Auckland airport services both domestic and international travel and is only 30 minutes drive from the house.  We are also only 2 1/2 hours drive from the Coromandel which is one of New Zealand's most popular holiday destinations and 3 hours from Taupo which provides world class trout fishing and winter skiing.  Amenities within the local area include pre-school (2kms), supermarket (4kms), Botany Town Centre, Doctors and Dentists (7 minutes drive), primary and intermediate schools (within 5kms), school buses at gate for secondary schools.  St Kentigens School and College, one of Auckland's best private schools is situated within a 15-20 minute drive from the house.

The local shops at Whitford Village are 2kms down the road, there are two very good pony clubs and two excellent golf courses within the area.  Pictures of the Whitford area

History of Whitford

Whitford was named after Richard Whitford who had a flax mill on the Waikopua near Housons Creek although some believe Whitford referred to the White-ford over the Turanga Creek at the end of Sandstone Road, where the salt dries when the tide is out.  The first European settlers were George and William Trice who started farming “Poplar Farm” in Clifton Road in 1843.  Most settlers (such as the Emblings, Doidges, Broomfields, Wades and Kellys) arrived after the mid 1850s. Their descendants still live in the area today.  Ostriches on Nathans “Whitford Park” estate provided feathers for the fashion trade from 1869 until the 1920s. They also trained racehorses, which is still an important activity today.  Trices goldmine later became the Whitford landfill and metal is still quarried from this early, rather unproductive venture.

Whitford provided firewood, post and rail timbers, as well as butter, eggs and cheese to the village shopkeepers in Howick. Granger’s brickworks operated from the 1870s until 1920.  Water transport was the preferred method until the 1920s when roads and motor transport became more reliable.

Today, Whitford has its own shops and small businesses in it's village centre including a real estate agent, accountant, dentist, service station, restaurant, gift shop and furniture restoration specialist.

Lifestyle blocks for city workers have taken over some farms, although beef, sheep, dairy and timber are the main activities. timber are the main activities.
